Old wheelie bin stickers can be stubborn. Whether yours is faded, peeling, or just in need of a refresh, here's how to remove it cleanly — without scratching or damaging your bin — so you're ready to apply a fresh new number.
What You'll Need
- A hairdryer or heat gun (on a low setting)
- A plastic card or old loyalty card
- Washing-up liquid and warm water
- A clean cloth
- Optionally: a small amount of cooking oil or adhesive remover
Step 1: Warm the Sticker
Heat softens the adhesive and makes the sticker much easier to peel away cleanly. Hold a hairdryer about 5–10cm from the sticker and warm it for 20–30 seconds. You'll notice the edges start to lift slightly — that's your cue to move on to the next step.
No hairdryer? On a warm sunny day, leaving the bin in direct sunlight for 20–30 minutes can have a similar effect.
Step 2: Peel from the Corner
Use your fingernail or a plastic card to lift one corner of the sticker. Peel slowly and at a low angle — pulling too fast or at a steep angle can cause the sticker to tear, leaving more residue behind. If it starts to resist, apply a little more heat and try again.
Avoid using metal tools like knives or scrapers, as these can scratch the plastic surface of the bin.
Step 3: Remove Any Sticky Residue
Once the sticker is off, you may be left with a sticky patch. Here's how to tackle it:
- Cooking oil or baby oil: Apply a small amount to the residue, leave for a minute, then rub away with a cloth. Works surprisingly well!
- Washing-up liquid: A good scrub with warm soapy water will shift lighter residue.
- Adhesive remover (e.g. Sticky Stuff Remover): For stubborn patches, a proprietary adhesive remover is very effective. Follow the product instructions and rinse well afterwards.
Step 4: Clean and Dry the Surface
Once all the residue is gone, give the area a thorough clean with warm soapy water and dry it completely. This is important — any grease or moisture left on the surface will affect how well your new sticker bonds.

Quick Tips
- Don't rush the peeling — slow and steady leaves less residue.
- Warm weather makes the whole process easier.
- Always clean and dry the surface before applying a new sticker.
- If the old sticker is very old or has been on for years, it may take a little more patience — but it will come off!
